Cornell Voice champions the human voice.

The human voice communicates our stories, ideas, memories, insights and experiences to recall our past, define our present and shape our future. Nothing can replace its nuance to communicate who we are.

Because of this, and as we move into an AI era, the human voice will be a discerning marker of trust and connection in spoken communications.

This is why we work with prominent business leaders, advocates and law makers. Their voices directly impact our world and help determine the voice we will have in the future.

We embody distinctiveness.
We empower distinctiveness.

Cornell Voice straddles two disparate worlds: theatre and business.

Our work begins with the technical and philosophical rigour of the world’s most advanced spoken voice methodologies for theatre. We then translate them so they are accessible for business leaders and relevant for their speaking demands in an organisation, boardroom or courtroom.
This is our distinction.

Your voice is at the heart of our work.

Cornell Voice empowers the distinctiveness of your individual voice. We help you discern your natural voice from your habitual voice, freeing you from limiting vocal patterns to revive your natural expressivity, increase your influential capacity and embolden your right to speak.

We help leaders find their voice.

 The Linklater Voice Methodology

Cornell Voice attributes its core language and philosophy to the work of Kristin Linklater by whom most of the Cornell Voice team have been certified.

Kristin Linklater was a world-renowned teacher of voice production for actors (passing away in 2020). She was a formidable force in theatre, changing the landscape of actor training globally with her approach to voice.

Kristin trained as an actor at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) where the legendary Iris Warren was her voice teacher. Warren had developed her own unique approach to training actors’ voices acknowledging the psycho-emotional influences on the voice.

The Linklater/Warren work can be indirectly traced back to Lionel Logue - the Australian voice coach who trained King George VI as seen in the movie; The  King’s Speech. Kristin then trained as a voice coach with Iris Warren and subsequently taught at LAMDA for six years.

In 1963, she moved to the United States and was a Master Teacher of Voice in the now Tisch School of the Arts and worked all across Broadway.

In 1978, she was a co-founder with Tina Packer of Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, Massachusetts where she lived, teaching and acting with Shakespeare & Company for the next twelve years. In 1997 she became Professor of Theatre Arts at Columbia University in New York City.

In 2013, Kristin retired from Columbia University as Professor Emerita and returned to her native Orkney where in 2017 she was proud to be made an Honorary Fellow of the University of the Highlands and Islands.

She has published two leading textbooks: Freeing the Natural Voice: Imagery and Art in the Practice of Voice and Language and Freeing Shakespeare’s Voice: The Actor’s Guide to Talking the Text translated into 9 languages.
